CHARACTER NAME: Kamui Katsuragi | The Great Kamui
SERIES: Cardfight!! Vanguard
CHRONOLOGY: post-Asian Circuit Hen
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND:
While not much is known about Kamui’s homelife, it is shown that he gets bullied and beaten by classmates during his younger years because he is small compared to other boys his age. This lasts for some time until he meets a boy named Gouki at a Card Shop called Otokomae. There, Gokui shows him that physical strength and size isn't needed in order to be strong and it is also there that he gets introduced to Vanguard, an extremely popular game not only in Japan but around the world as well that is usually played on table top.
Immediately he becomes besotted with the game, drawn by the fact that here his size is not a weakness. He shows an incredible aptitude for it, becoming skilled enough that eventually the team that represents Card Shop Otokomae in the National tournament approaches him to recruit him. Despite all he owes to Gouki and Team Otokomae, he turns down the offer. Shortly after, he stops frequenting the shop and spends his time at another card shop called Card Capital.
There, he quickly builds a name for himself by winning consecutively against other fighters, even ones much older than he is, and forcing them to call him Kamui the Great. Impressed, a boy named Aichi asks him for a fight but Kamui declines, calling him ‘weak.’ This changes of course when he meets Aichi’s younger sister, Emi. Mistaking that the two of them are in a relationship, Kamui challenges Aichi, hoping that winning will also win him Emi’s heart. He wins their fight easily but learns the truth about them and, despite looking down on Aichi before, begins to call him big brother.
When Card Capital holds a tournament, he manages to get second and secures a place for himself as part of the team that will represent the shop in the Regional tournament along with Aichi, Kai (another frequent patron of Card Capital) and Misaki (the manager’s niece). Together they are known as Team Quadrifoglio, or Team Q4. They are able to beat opponents they go against as well as Team Otokomae and so are able to qualify for Nationals. Before the preliminaries for the Nationals however, Kamui gets into an argument with Kai over the value of teamwork. He becomes so angry that he runs away, even after Aichi tries to stop him. The remaining three eventually lose and the team is unable to fight in the Nationals. This makes Kamui extremely guilty, as he blames himself for not being there when they needed and depended on him.
This guilt fuels him for the next tournament, giving him reason to fight with his all to make up for what he did during the previous National tournament. Despite coming up against difficult opponents many times, this time Q4 wins the Nationals and become known as the strongest cardfighter team in Japan.
Not long after, Team Q4 receives an invitation to a new tournament for fighters all over Asia called Vanguard Fight Circuit. Aichi is determined to go in order to meet Takuto, the boy who is organizing the tournament in order to ask him about the sudden change in clan (the group that each card unit is associated with) of his deck that no one but him seems to notice. Even though only one member of Q4 is needed to be in the team attending the Circuit, he invites Misaki and Kamui so they can compete together as a team once more. Misaki agrees immediately but Kamui took a bit more effort to convince.
In the time since winning Nationals, Kamui had been going back more and more often, until finally taking Gouki's offer and joining Team Otokomae in the hopes that being part of a new team will give him the challenge he's looking for as they aim towards the next National tournament. Of course he's torn between keeping his promise with Gouki and being able to go against world class fighters when he hears about VF Circuit. To solve this, he and Aichi have a cardfight; if he wins, he stays with Otokomae but if Aichi wins, he rejoins Q4. In the end Aichi wins and so Q4 is reunited once again.
Each leg of the tournament is held in a different city and so the teams travel to Singapore, Seoul and Hong Kong to participate. While they do well, each time they lose during the finals. Finally when the tournament comes to Japan, they are able to succeed, becoming champions of the Japan leg. They are invited to meet with the host of VF Circuit, Takuto, and it's then that he reveals to them that Vanguard units are real and that they are inhabitants of a planet called Cray. Three leaders of the warrior clans that live on Cray were taken away by an entity known as Void and Takuto needs their help, along with those who won during the previous legs, to bring them back.
Afterwards, he transport everyone to a place that serves as a gateway between Earth and Cray. There they fight a boy named Leon, who is tricked by the Void to stop them. They succeed and Aichi is able to free the captured units as well as return everyone’s memories back to normal.
The person Kamui is closest to is definitely Aichi.. He cares for Aichi deeply and it shows in his actions. While he began to call Aichi ‘big brother’ in an effort to get closer to Emi, he eventually comes to see Aichi as an actual brother. There are many instances where he gets upset for Aichi’s sake even if the other boy isn’t. One example is his argument with Kai during the first tournament. Team fights are usually fought with three members and because Team Q4 has four, Kai’s suggestion is to let the weakest sit out which is a thinly veiled jab at Aichi. Kamui disagrees vehemently and states that all members are equally important, keeping his defense even when Aichi himself agreed with Kai that he shouldn’t fight.
Despite the fact that he looked down on the older boy at first, he actually does grow to respect and admire him. This is most notable in his final fight at the Nationals. His opponent is the same as the one Aichi lost to in the first tournament and he says that he will not lose to that fighter because he learned from Aichi’s fight and Aichi is the one person he cannot disappoint.
While not as close, Kamui does admire Misaki and recognizes her as a strong cardfighter. She is also one of the few people that he listens to. Misaki can usually cow him or intimidate him into acting a certain way (usually it's to be quiet when he's too loud). Together, Aichi, Misaki and Kamui are a tightnit team and it's obvious that they all value each other very much. The way they act around each other is different when there is an outsider and it's obvious that they are all very comfortable with each other. The fourth member of Q4 is also someone Kamui respects, but only because he has skill and he is important to Aichi. The two of them have very different personalities and it usually leads to them clashing with each other.
Gouki is another prominent figure in Kamui’s life and he admires him as a strong cardfighter. Despite the difference in their ages it's easy to see that the two are friends and they see each other as equals. If not for Gouki's sister, Kamui might have stayed at Otokomae. Despite stating his reason for not joining Gouki's team is because he doesn't want to join a strong team and then depending on them, it's revealed that he stopped going to Otokomae because of Nagisa.
The girl is two years his junior and is completely in love with him. No matter how much Kamui insists he does not like her back, she clings onto him and is more of an annoyance than anything else. Surprisingly, Gouki actually encourages his sister's actions. It doesn't matter how much Nagisa chases after him though because Kamui is in love with Aichi's younger sister Emi, going as far as calling her his goddess. She’s the reason he sticks around the others at Card Capital like he does and also the reason why he calls Aichi ‘big brother.’
Kamui has two other friends that he is seen with often. Reiji and Eiji are firm supporters of Kamui, even calling him Kamui-san. He doesn't see them as just followers though but as actual friends and often goes out of his way to do things for them as well as caring for them in general.
PERSONALITY:
At first glance, Kamui is an egotistical brat. When he is first introduced, he is shown to be mercilessly beating others in Vanguard and forcing them to call him Kamui-san. Not even those who are older than him are saved from this. It seems like this is the only reason he came to Card Capital-- to find strong card fighters, win against them and to get the recognition that he thinks he rightfully deserves because being overlooked or underestimated is something he hates. From the way he acts after every win, it’s obvious that he is very confident in himself.
He can also be outrightly defiant, especially towards those he doesn’t know or those he doesn’t think deserves his respect. Even when it is an adult figure in his life, there’s no guarantee that he will listen to what they will say, such as when Shin (the manager at Card Capital) lectures him about sleeping properly, he continues doing what he was as if he didn’t hear what the manager said.
The truth is, he’s really just a little boy trying too hard to look tough to others, so much so that sometimes he believes the loud boastful boy is his true self. The first time the weaker side of him is shown is after his fight against Aichi in Card Capital’s tournament. Despite the fact that he’s a more experienced card fighter than Aichi, the fight makes him so nervous that he actually trips over his own feet when he leaves the table after his victory but he doesn’t understand why he tripped because he doesn’t think he’s nervous because he’s strong. All he wants is a place to belong to and a place where people will accept him. The boy he shows to everyone in everyday life is merely a cover to shield his weak and vulnerable self. It’s a defense mechanism brought about by the fact that he used to be bullied when he was younger. To him, strength is everything-- whether it be actual physical strength or strength that comes from being skilled at a card game. This belief is also reflected in the way he plays and strategizes in Vanguard, where he relies on power ups and powerful cards to rack up on attack points.
When he becomes a part of the regular group at Card Capital, he begins to start dropping some of his pretenses. While he still believes that strength is important, he also realizes that relying on friends and allowing them the rely on him in return is important too. A lot of his motivation throughout the various tournaments Q4 attends is a direct result of this. He wants to be useful to Aichi and Misaki and he’s not afraid to tell his opponent that when they question his desire to win. It’s incredibly obvious that his teammates are important to him. He worries about them and becomes angry for their sake and he’s completely different than the selfish boy he was when he first met them.
Kamui can be very straightforward and if there is something that’s on his mind, he doesn’t hold back. Sometimes this does cause problems with others, especially when there is a difference in views. He can be stubborn so in these cases, compromises can never be made since he seems to pick fights with others who are also stubborn. His hot blooded nature can lead him to overreact, even when there is no need to. Coupled with his tendency to misunderstand people, Kamui can often be seen yelling or screaming threats. He can also get embarrassed very easily.
While he tends to try an avoid his own personal weaknesses, he is acutely aware of his weakness when it comes to Vanguard. He knows his strengths and he knows what he lacks. Another difference in how he handles cardfights and real life is that he actually is able to be flexible when it comes to his fighting style. He is able to learn from his mistakes and change strategies or improve by watching others. Kamui is never satisfied with where he is and always strives to become better. Even while both Aichi and Misaki kept their original decks after Q4 wins the National Tournament, Kamui continually worked at it to improve it. He doesn’t believe in holding back and will always put his entire heart into doing something once he has decided on it. Also, Kamui really values his promises and will always try to keep his word.
POWER:
All of Kamui’s powers are gained when he arrives in the City.
Ride - Kamui can Ride units from the cardgame Vanguard. In other words, he becomes the Vanguard and takes the form of the unit he Rides. He is limited to Riding one unit at a time and must start at a unit that is grade 0 before Riding units in succeeding grade levels (0→1→2→3). He can only Ride units that are in his deck.
Call - Kamui has the ability to call one unit from his deck and bring it to the real world exactly as it is from Cray. He can then control it with his commands, either to mobilize it or use it to attack. He can call up to a maximum of five units and only ones that exist in his deck.
Both Riding and Calling are limited to function exactly as it does in actual game of Vanguard. This means there are three units that are able to attack and the other three are restricted to support. If the Vanguard (Kamui) is taken out/injured severely/knocked out then all of his called units will disappear as well. .
FINAL NOTES:
He has a habit of unintentionally using malaprops or just plain using wrong words when he speaks.
